As I walk the Norwichtowne Green seeking the perfect place to sketch, my mind wanders back in time. This green was home to the Marquis de Lafayette and his troops during our Revolutionary War. My mind pretends that I am walking side by side, arm in arm with the Marquis as we discuss our families and what is in my picnic basket? Slowly we stop, I look up, he lets go of my arm and vanishes back in time. Before me is the perfect spot to paint this grand home.
I unpack my art supplies from my basket and pour my tea into my cup. Slowly sipping hot tea I ponder the perspective of my subject while thoughts of my mother fill my head.
My mother had many picnics here as a child. She heard fantastic tales of our family fighting in all our wars since before we were a country. My mother heard tales of our family fighting with the Marquis. Thankfully mother passed this history to me along with her love of all the arts. I hope I can do this little painting justice to honor her and the Marquis.
Time to paint.
